Determined to build a new life and become an active member of her community, Zuhal Guneysu enrolled on an English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) course shortly after arriving in Stafford.
Starting on an introductory course in September 2023, she has since achieved Entry Level 3 and Level 1 qualifications and is now completing Level 2 ESOL alongside an Employability qualification.
Her dedication to learning has helped her build confidence, form lasting friendships and play a more active role in community life.
With degrees in Psychology and Turkish Language and Literature, Zuhal was keen to use her skills and experience to support others.
She now volunteers with local charity, supporting adults with learning disabilities through creative arts activities that encourage confidence, wellbeing and social connection.
She is also preparing to begin a new role as a Stafford community volunteer buddy, helping support people experiencing social isolation and mental health challenges reconnect with local community groups and services.
Zuhal said: “Learning English has changed my life and helped me feel a stronger sense of belonging in my community.
“It has given me the confidence to make friends, support others and contribute positively to my community.”
Zuhal’s story demonstrates how adult education can transform lives, strengthen communities and empower people to make a lasting difference through volunteering, inclusion and community engagement.
