Finlay Cousins graduated with a degree in Architecture but soon realised his ambitions lay in project management rather than following a traditional architectural career path.
Determined to gain practical experience while continuing to develop professionally, he joined Stoke-on-Trent-based Powell Design & Construction, an award-winning family-run business bringing architects, designers and construction specialists together under one roof to deliver bespoke residential projects from concept to completion, and enrolled on a Level 4 Associate Project Manager Apprenticeship with independent training provider Performance Through People (PTP).
Working as a Construction Project Coordinator, Finlay plays a key role across both the design and construction sides of the business.
His responsibilities include producing drawings in Revit, carrying out measured surveys, coordinating site activities and working closely with clients, consultants and suppliers to keep projects moving forward.
Increased responsibility
The apprenticeship has enabled him to build on his university knowledge while developing the practical skills required in the construction industry.
Since starting the programme, he has taken on increasing responsibility and contributed to a range of live projects.
One of his standout achievements has been helping to coordinate a major renovation project, acting as a vital link between the client, subcontractors and site teams to ensure smooth communication and delivery.
Reflecting on his journey, Finlay said: “My apprenticeship has given me the confidence, knowledge and practical experience to turn my passion for construction and design into a long-term career.”
His dedication has also earned industry recognition, with shortlistings for Young Construction Professional of the Year and Young Architect or Design Professional of the Year at the Building the Future Awards.
With his apprenticeship continuing, Finlay is now working towards Chartered status with the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), demonstrating how ambition, practical learning and the support of forward-thinking employers can create strong foundations for future success.
