From apprentice to real-life tooth fairy

Jessica Hemmings ' journey from an apprentice learner to a confident, skilled, and inspiring Dental Nurse perfectly demonstrates the power of apprenticeships.

Jessica completed her Dental Nurse apprenticeship with independent training provider Performance Through People in 2024 and was supported by her tutor, Amy Johnson.

Reflecting on the experience, Jessica said: “I completed my Dental Nurse apprenticeship with PTP and Amy as a tutor… it was one of the best courses I’ve ever completed. Amy was an amazing tutor. I passed at what I believe was around 95% for the exam.”

Since qualifying, Jessica has continued to thrive. She now works in an outstanding dental practice in Uttoxeter, where strong leadership and a supportive environment have helped her develop. Her passion for dentistry has grown, leading her to train to be an Oral Health Educator.

She visits schools – often dressed as a tooth fairy – and is planning to run sessions in care homes and prenatal classes. These experiences have strengthened her confidence and allowed her to make a difference beyond the practice.

Jessica explains: “The achievement of being a dental nurse brings me pride and joy… I want to continue to move forward, increase my dentistry knowledge, and become a valued member of my practice.”

Her tutor, Amy Johnson, added: “She is the epitome of what an apprenticeship is all about: the opportunity to learn, become comfortable and skilled, and  use that as a foundation to achieve more.”
